Biography of John Slevin |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John Slevin CHEMICAL LABOURER PLAYED ONE MATCH Joseph was born in Ireland in late 1855. In 1881 he was living at 43 Waterloo Street close to the St. Helens town centre. The house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. He married Catherine Duffy in the summer of 1880 and they went on to have five children. John played in the three-quarters in a fixture against a St. Helens District team on the 8th of April 1882. The match was played at Littler’s Field in Dentons Green but an inexperienced Saints team lost on the day. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. John died in St. Helens in October 1906 at the age of 50. |
