HERITAGE NO : Robert Slater BOOKKEEPER FROM NEWTON LE WILLOWS Robert was one of two Saints with the same name. This Robert played fro the St. Helens Rangers in the early 1880s. He was born in Newton-le-Willows in 1854 and his family moved to live lin the Pocket Nook district of St. Helens. His father, William was a labourer. Robert trained as a bookkeeper. His only recorded match was on the 7th of November 1881 when the Saints defeated a reserve team from Sutton. Robert played in the forwards that day and ended up on the winning side. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. In the 1880s Robert married Elizabeth and they went on to have 4 children. The family lived for a while at 58 Shaw Street, St. Helens close to the main railway station. In 1911 Robert was working as a clerk and living at 109 Oxford Street, St. Helens. He died in the town in June 1927 at the age of 73. |
