Biography of John Houghton |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John Frederick Houghton CLERK IN ALKALI WORKS John was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 9th of September 1860. His father, also named John, was a publican at the Running Horses Public House in Bridge Street, St. Helens. In 1881 he was working as a Clerk in the Manager’s office of an alkali works in the town. He made his debut on the wing against the Reserves team of Sutton on the 7th of November 1881. The Saints won that day. His second and final recorded match was on the 8th of April 1882 when the St. Helens Rangers lost to a District team from St. Helens at Littler’s Field in Dentons Green. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. On the 13th of January 1901 John married Elizabeth Morris in Southport and they went on to have two daughters. John died on the 8th of October 1938 at the age of 78. His death was recorded in Preston. |
