Biography of Allen Waters |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Allen Waters REMARKABLE COINCIDENCE St Helens Rangers had two players named A. Waters in their teams during the early 1880s. Both worked as stone masons. However, they were not related. Allen’s family moved to St. Helens in the 1850s. His father, John, originated in Ireland and as well as working as a stone mason he ran a pub at 92 Park Road in Parr, St. Helens. In 1881, Allen was living with his then widowed mother Ellen at the same address. Allen was working as a stone mason. He made his debut for the Saints on the 5th of February 1881 in a home defeat to St. Helens Recs Reserves team. Allen could play in the three-quarters or at half back. Allen’s last recorded match was against Tranmere on the 12th of March, 1881. It was an away fixture which the Saints lost. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. We know little about Allen’s personal life after his playing days were over. He did marry an Irish woman named Mary. We believe Allen moved out of the area in the 1880s and possibly emigrated to pursue a new life. |
