Biography of Joseph Howard |
---|
![]() ![]() HERITAGE NO : Joseph Edward Howard ONE MATCH CLOGGER Joseph was a local lad who was born in St Helens in September 1860. His father, Edward was a labourer hailing from Scarisbrick in Lancashire and his mother, Elizabeth originated from nearby Burscough. In 1871 the young family were living at St. Annes Place in St. Helens. Joseph made his debut for the St. Helens Rangers on the 5th of February 1881 when the team lost to the St. Helens Recs Reserves at Ralph Smith’s paddock near Boundary Road. That was the only recorded first team match for Joseph but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances was probably higher. He was likely to have played for the Second team as well. In 1881 Joseph was living with the family of his brother-in-law, John Blake, at 28 Fenton Street, St. Helens and working as a clogger. Sadly, Joseph died in St. Helens in April 1888 at the age of just 27. |
