Biography of John Clare |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John Clare PUBLICAN John was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 16th of February 1863. His father, named George, was a publican who was born in Tyldesley, Lancashire. John was a half back who is recorded as just playing one match for the Saints. The game was for St. Helens Rangers against St. Helens Recs Reserves on the 5th of February 1881. The Saints lost that match which was played on Ralph Smith’s Paddock off Boundary Road in St. Helens. The score was 3 goals and 2 tries to the Recs against 2 tries to the Saints. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. In 1881 he was living at 69 Oldfield Street, St. Helens and working as a labourer in a plate glass works. John married Harriet Spooner who hailed from South Shields. They had a daughter named Ellen. In 1901 the family were living at 70 College Street in St Helens which we believe was a public house with John listed as a hotel keeper and publican. Two years later the family were stepping off a ship which had just landed in New York City. Soon after they moved to Kokomo in Indiana in the USA. John died there on the 15th of November 1926 at the age of 63. |
