Biography of William E Matthews |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William E Matthews STAFFORDSHIRE LAD William was born in Burslem, Staffordshire in 1859. This was in the heart of the ‘Potteries’ though his father, also named William, was a stone mason. In the 1870s William the younger moved to Rainford Lancashire, close to St. Helens, and was living in lodgings in Victoria Terrace there in 1881. There he gained employment as a coal miner in the area. William is recorded as playing in just one match for the Saints on the 7th of January 1881 against Newton le Willows. This would have been played at Ralph Smith’s paddock. William played in the pack of forwards and ended the match on the winning side. In the 1880s he married Rainford resident Rebecca Cropper and they had two daughters. Sadly, his wife had died by 1901 and in 1901 he was living at Number One Cottage in Rainford with his daughter Ann. We have been unable to discover what happened to William after this and do not possess any details of his death. |
