HERITAGE NO : Alfred Mees FAMILY OF JOINERS Albert was a local lad who was born in St Helens in early 1860. His father, Thomas, was a joiner. In 1881 he was living in Dentons Green Lane and had picked up his father’s tools to work as a joiner. His younger brother Ethelbert who also played for the Saints was at the same address. Alfred played his only match for the Saints on the 30th of November 1880 when the St. Helens Rangers entertained the St. Helens Recs Reserves at Ralph Smith’s paddock close to Boundary Road. He played on the wing and at the end of the game Alfred ended up on the winning team. He married Jane Simpkin in March 1882. The couple proceeded to have three children. In 1911 the family were living at 91 North Road in St. Helens and Alfred was still working as a joiner. He died in St. Helens in October 1931 at the age of 72. |
