Biography of James Heyes |
---|
HERITAGE NO : James Heyes BROOK STREET GANG James was a local lad who was born in St Helens in 1855. He was one of the young lads who used to watch the Originals play at Boundary Road and up at Queens Park just off Prescot Road. He was recruited to join the St. Helens Rangers at the start of the 1880-81 season just before they had to relocate to play on Ralph Smith’s patch. We have him recorded as playing five matches over two seasons but he probably played many more than this as records of team-lists are hard to find in those years. He made his debut against St. Helens Recs Reserves on the 9th of October 1880. He played in the Saints’ pack of forwards that day. His final outing was a against a team made up of players from the junior teams in the St. Helens District on the 8th of April 1882. In 1881 he was lodging with the Rigby family at 59 Brook Street, St. Helens. He married Sarah Seddon in the 1880s and they went on to have 8 children. James worked a s a coal miner. By 1911, he was already widowed and living at 72 Lowe Street near the St. Helens town centre. James died St. Helens on the 2nd of March 1916 at the age of 61. |
