 HERITAGE NO : Albert Brown FITTER AND TURNER Albert was born in St. Helens in the summer of 1859. In 1861 he was living at the Police Station, St.Helens where his father Peter was a police sergeant. Over the next decade the family moved to live in Oxford Street, St. Helens and his father, Peter had left the Police force and was now working as a labourer. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. In the 1879/80 season Albert was one of the young lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the newly formed Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC. He played regularly for that team in that campaign. Albert made his debut for the Saints on the 9th of October 1880 against St. Helens Recs. The Saints lost that match to their local rivals. In all he is recorded as playing in 6 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. His final recorded outing was for the St. Helens Rangers on the 4th of March 1882 against St. Helens Recs. In another home match, the lads of the Recs were victorious. Albert had married Elizabeth Roberts on the 23rd of February 1878 and they would go on to raise two sons, Peter and Albert. Albert died in his hometown in April 1939 at the age of 79. |
