HERITAGE NO : Josiah Wells COLOURED GLASS Josiah was a local lad who was born in St Helens in October 1858. His mother hailed from Stoke on Trent. In 1881 Josiah was living with his widowed mother at 39 Rigby Street in St. Helens and working as a labourer in an iron foundry. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. In the 1879/80 season Josiah was one of the young lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the merry mob of Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC. He played regularly for that team in that campaign. On the last date of the season he played for St. Helens in an away fixture against Widnes which resulted in a heavy defeat for the Saints. On the day Josiah played in the three-quarters for St. Helens RFC. Josiah moved employment sectors from the iron industry to glass. He worked in a glass works as a coloured of glass. Josiah died in St. Helens in January 1915 at the age of 56. |
