HERITAGE NO : William Davies CARTER William was a local lad who was born in St Helens in June 1860. His father, John, was a coal miner. William was one of nine children and in 1871 he was living with his parents at 31 Lowe Street St. Helens. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. In the 1879/80 season William was one of the young lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the merry mob of Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC. William played for Eccleston Rangers against St. Luke’s Hornets on the 21st of February 1880. On the last date of the season he played for St. Helens in an away fixture against Widnes which resulted in a heavy defeat for the Saints. He married Mary Jane Caunce in St. Helens on the 26th of November 1883. He died in St. Helens in January 1939 at the age of 79. |
