Biography of James Battle |
---|
HERITAGE NO : James Battle GENERAL LABOURER ALSO RECS PLAYER James was a local lad who was born in St Helens in 1854. He worked as a general labourer. In 1881 he was living at 40 Wilson Street in St. Helens. In the 1879/80 season Robert was one of the lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the newly formed Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC. He played regularly for that team in that campaign. James seemed to be looking for a rugby home in that campaign. He also played in the trial for the St. Helens Recs and eventually he ended up playing for the local rivals. His Saints’ debut came on the 27th of March 1880 against Widnes. Many former Eccleston Rangers lads were completing the season’s fixtures for the Originals in final game of the campaign. The Saints played at Widnes and went down to a hefty defeat. He seems to have left the area after his rugby days were over. |
