Biography of Charles Lewis

HERITAGE NO :
Charles Lewis

MECHANIC MARRIED WELL

Charles was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 24th of April, 1861. His father, William, was a bookkeeper and clerk. In 1871 Charles was living with his parents at 23 Peter Street, St. Helens. Their house was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men and the rebranded Eccleston Rangers were scouring the streets on a recruitment drive. When they knocked on number 23, they received a warm welcome.

Charles made his debut for the Eccleston Rangers on the 1st of November 1879 against a Widnes Reserves side. The Rangers lost that day and Charles played in the pack of forwards. His Saints’ debut came on the 13th of March 1880 against Widnes. It was the first match that the former Eccleston Rangers lads were completing the season’s fixtures for the Originals. The contest was marred by almost riotous invasions of the pitch by the local spectators.

We have him recorded as playing in 5 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. His last recorded match was against Tranmere on the 12th of March 1881 when the St. Helens Rangers lost an away fixture.

In 1881 he was living with his mother, Elizabeth, who was widowed by then. In 1890 he married Margaret Richardson whose father was the publican at the Plough Inn on Duke Street close to the centre of town. The couple moved into the pub where Margaret was still operating as a barmaid. Charles himself was working as a Steam Engine Fitter. Eventually, the couple would have five children.

Charles died in St Helens inn August 1929 at the age of 66.
