Biography of George Scott

HERITAGE NO :
George Scott

ENGINEERING FAMILY

George was born in St. Helens on the 12th of January, 1858. His father, also named George, was an engineer and iron founder and emanated from Morpeth in Northumberland.. Young George was to follow in his father’s occupational footsteps. The family lived in the salubrious St Annes district os St. Helens adjacent to Taylor Park. Other players like Tom Roughsedge and Edward Atherton Robinson lived close to George. This illustrates that there wasn’t an overnight surrender of rugby in St. Helens to the working class but rather a gradual transition over ten years from the mid 1870s to the mid 1880s.

George made his debut for St. Helens RFC own the 22nd of November 1879 against Birkenhead Wanderers. George played in the forwards that day and the match ended in a victory for the Saints. We have relatively few team sheets from the matches played in those early years and it could well be possible that George made more appearances.

George had lost his father by 1881 and was busy working as an engineer, merchant and machinery agent. His widowed mother was living off her own means and residing still in St Anne’s Road. He married Phoebe Townsend in Wigan in the summer of 1887 and the couple went on to have seven children. George and Phoebe moved to live at 34 Knowsley Road, St. Helens. As his business interests developed George set up his final enterprise as an Heating and Ventilation Engineer.

Eventually he settled down at Auckland House on Windleshaw Road in the town. He died on the 8th of May 1915 and left £771 in his will.
