Biography of Charles Lucas

HERITAGE NO :
Charles Lucas

ORIGINAL COAL MINER

Charles was a local lad who was born in Prescot in April 1857. His father was named Charles as well. He moved to St Helens as a young boy and took up lodgings in Stanley Street. Charles was working down the pit at the age of 15.

He made his debut for the Originals on the 22nd of November 1879 against the Birkenhead Wanderers. The Saints won that match with Charles playing in the forwards. This was the only recorded match for Charles. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. The number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. He was one the first coal miners to play for St. Helens RFC which indicated a changing of the guard in terms of recruitment policy by the Club.

He married Mary Ellen Gore in St. Helens on the 16th of March, 1879 and they went on to have four children. He was living at 14 Ward Street in St. Helens in 1881. In 1911 he was still working as a collier and residing at 2 Sandon Street in St. Helens.

Charles died in St. Helens in December 1922 at the age of 65.
