HERITAGE NO : Thomas Kitchen BOOKKEEPER Thomas was born in St. Helens in 1853. His father, William, brought up the family in Croppers Hill Cottage on Liverpool Road in St. Helens. William gained employment as an agent responsible for the Collection of Rates. His father’s connections generated an invitation to Thomas to try his hand at rugby. His only recorded match, though he probably played more games, was against Wigan on the 3rd of March 1877 at Queens Park. The Saints triumphed that day and Thomas played in the pack of forwards. Thomas married Mary Welsby in 1879 and for a while the couple lived with his brother’s family in West Park Road, St. Helens, Thomas was working as a bookkeeper. The couple then moved to Walton in Liverpool where they raised four children. By 1911, Thomas was widowed and the working as a railway clerk. He died in Liverpool in October 1926 at the age of 73. |
