Biography of William Butler |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Butler COFFEE HOUSE PUBLICAN William was born in St. Helens in July 1857. His father, Robert, was a retired auctioneer. He fitted into the right rugby circles to be recruited to the rugby fraternity in St. Helens. In 1871 the family were living at 10 Bridge Street right in the middle of the town’s shopping and commercial area. He played for St. Helens in the away fixture against Waterloo A team on the 4th of April 1876. This is his only recorded match but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of his appearances is likely to be higher. In 1881 he was a publican at The Coffee House in Market Street, St. Helens. As well as running the pub, William had also been trained in glass staining. He married Emma Bridgwater in Dudley in 1878 and they went on to have a daughter Elizabeth. It was possible that his wife was behind a move to the Midlands which saw William and Emma living and managing the Wheatsheaf Public House in Birmingham. William was also recorded on the 1911 Census as being a glass stainer. Great to know that he was hanging on to his St. Helens upbringing. We believe that he died in Birmingham in December 1930 aged 73. |
