Biography of Frederick Barnes |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Frederick Gorell Barnes MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT Frederick was certainly a high flier, at least away from the rugby pitch. As a young man he frequented the social occasions around St. Helens and Liverpool where he was recruited to play for St. Helens RFC in the mid 1870s. In 1871 he was living at Moseley Hill in Wavertree, Liverpool. His father Charles was described as an ‘Australian Merchant’, a term referring to his trade location as opposed to his nationality. Frederick’ s house in Liverpool was quite plush and the family had three servants to call upon for their daily needs. Frederick studied Law at Jesus College Cambridge and was called to the bar in 1885. After this he was never to reside in the North West of England again. He married Catherine Lethbridge in Lynstead, Kent in 1894. One year later he was elected to become the Member of Parliament for Faversham, Kent. He served in the House of Commons for five years. He had several more attempts at returning to the House but he failed to be elected. In the second decade of the twentieth century he worked for the Ministry of Food and was knighted in 1916. Frederick died on March the 17th 1939 at the age of 82. |
