Biography of John Bate |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John James Bate MANAGER OF BRICKWORKS John was born in St. Helens in 1856. He was a forward who was recorded as playing one match for the Saints on the 3rd of February 1877 against Cheetham. The Manchester team won that day. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. In his early days John worked as a coal merchant’s clerk. He married Ann from Ormskirk and they went on to have 4 children. By 1911 he was living in the salubrious area of St. Annes at Coney Villa on Prescot Road. His residence was maintained by employing a servant. He died in St. Helens in April, 1933 at the age of 77. |
