Biography of William Marsden |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Marsden COTTONED ON We don’t suppose that William ever intended to play for the Saints. As the St. Helens team arrived at Wigan Cricket Ground to play Wigan, their opponents realised that their opposition that day had only arrived with 10 players. On the 25th of November 1876 William was plucked from the home team pool to compensate the apparent shortfall in the St. Helens ranks. The Saints were well and truly beaten that day. William was born in Kendal and came to Wigan to seek regular employment in the 1870s. He left his father to sweat away at his blacksmiths anvil. He married the locally born widow Elizabeth Whittle and they went on to raise six children. The couple lived at 16 Taylor Street, Wigan and William was employed in a local mill as a cotton operative. There are no leads as what became of the household. William could well have been the Mr. Marsden who emigrated to Canada. |
