Biography of William Hammill

HERITAGE NO :
William Hammill

ONE OF THREE SAINTLY BROTHERS

St. Helens-born, William was older than his brothers Martin and John both of whom played for the Saints in the 1870s. William was born on the 2nd of April 1853 in Windle, St. Helens. The family lived originally in the Dentons Green area of the town. William’s father, John Cummings Hammill, was a brewer and the family were comfortably off and well serviced by a number of servants. The Hammill brothers moved easily in the upper social circles of the town and were readily recruited to kick the leather for the newly formed St Helens. RFC.

William’s first recorded match was the away fixture against Wigan on 25th of November 1876, though few team sheets have survived from those early days and he could well have featured in an earlier match. The aforementioned game was frankly shambolic. The Saints arrived at the ground with only 10 players and had to borrow William Marsden from the hosts to try and make a game of it. Predictably they were soundly beaten that day.

William started work as a clerk but soon found a good opening as a Life Insurance Officer. The position involved William moving to live and work in London. In 1892 he married Emily Sophia Turner in Holborn, London. His wife hailed from Torquay in Devon and soon enough she found herself back at the seaside when the couple moved to retire in Worthing, Sussex. Incidentally, his younger brother, Martin, also moved nearby eventually.

William died in Worthing in April 1941 at the age of 88.
