Biography of John Wolfenden |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John Lightfoot Wolfenden LAND AND MINE SURVEYOR John was born on the 15th of June 1850 in St Helens. His father, also named John, was a railway Station Superintendent. The family were comfortably off and lived in the salubrious district of St. Anns in the town. A number of his team mates also resided in the same less polluted area. John played in the very first match for the newly-formed St. Helens RFC, a twenty-a-side game against Liverpool Rifle Brigade, on 24th of January 1874 at Boundary Road, St. Helens. He played in the forwards that day. St. Helens didn’t trouble the scorers on that great day; the opposition that day made five touchdowns, but didn’t convert any so the result was ‘a draw in their favour’! In 1880 cemented his place in St. Helens society by joining the local branch of the Freemasons. No fewer than 12 players from the early days eventually joined the same lodge including his chum Charles Cuthbertson Wilson. He married Margaret Forshaw in in the summer of 1884 in Liverpool. The couple would proceed to have two daughters, Edith and Agnes. John worked as a land and mines surveyor. They moved to a house named Fernholme, 175 Prescot Road, St Helens and soon employed two servants to maintain their new abode. The area was made up of ‘professional’ men and John retained a close knit circle of social, rugby and business contacts. John passed away at the early age of 45 in April 1896 and was buried in St. Helens Cemetery. |
