 HERITAGE NO : William Rawlinson CLUB SECREATRY William was born in St Helens in January 1859. His father, Cuthbert, was a Police Sergeant at the Central Police Station in St. Helens. Cuthbert was in a great location and situation to know and work with all the movers and shakers in the town. He was probably instrumental in drawing his son onto the playing fields of the quite exclusive Originals’ team. William made his debut for the Saints on the 9th of October, 1875 against the Liverpool Rifle Brigade at the Queens Recreation Grounds on Boundary Road. We have him recorded as playing in 4 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. This would certainly be the case as he took over as Captain of the ‘Orginals’ from Austin Cooper Carr for the 1876/77 season. His final appearance in the record books was on the 3rd of November 1877 when the Saints lost an away fixture at Walton Flamingoes. He would appear to have been an indispensable member of the Club in this period. William also acted as secretary for several seasons and his contact address in the late 1870s was recorded in the press as 83 Croppers Hill, St. Helens. Unlike the majority of his playing colleagues William was a manual worker engaged as a bottle maker in a local glass factory. His story and connections certainly has the makings of a decent Victorian stage drama! William married Emma Challinor on the 18th of June, 1880 in Ravenhead, St. Helens. And they went on to have 8 children. William died in St. Helens in 1916 at the age of 58. |
