Biography of James Rawlinson |
---|
HERITAGE NO : James Rawlinson RAWLINSON’S END James was born in St. Helens in June 1845. From his birth to 1881 James lived at 7, St. Anns Road, close to Taylor Park. This is a ‘well to do’ area and he didn’t have a job at the time. He lived with his widowed mother, Margaret, who was described as ‘Proprietor of Houses’. Several other early players from the first St. Helens RFC teams emanated from the same area. The forward made his debut for the Saints against Liverpool Rifle Brigade on the 9th of October 1875 and was a member of the winning team that day. It seems that James had plenty of time to enjoy the available leisure outlets in the town and we know that he also played cricket for the St. Helens Cricket Club. In the 1880s James moved to Appleton Village to live with his auntie, Alice Lyon, a grocer. The Census of 1891 describes him as ‘living on his own means.’ We can find no reference to any gainful employment in his life and we assume that he was the archetypal Victorian gentleman. He died in the summer of 1891 at the age of 46. |
