HERITAGE NO : Thomas Crooks PRIVATE SECRETARY Thomas was born in St Helens on the 28th March, 1858. His father, James, was a copper and timber merchant. In 1871 he was living in Cotham, St Helens and was one of ten children. James played for the Saints in their third season. He played in the forwards and fist appears on the team sheet in the home victory over Liverpool Rifle Brigade on the 9th of October 1875. He was joined in the pack by his younger brother James. In October 1876 he married local girl Catherine Penelope Gorse. In a noble effort to continue the family line, the couple proceeded to have 13 children. The busy family settled at 115 North Road, St Helens and Thomas elected to become a Private Secretary and bookkeeper rather than venture into the family timber business. Along with several other team members Thomas joined the local lodge of the Masons in 1884. Thomas moved house several times around the town including properties in Wellington Terrace and Vincent Street. Thomas died in St Helens in July 1903 at the age of 50. |
