HERITAGE NO : James Crooks TIMBER KNIGHT James was born in St Helens on the 28th March, 1858. Hi father, James, was a copper and timber merchant. In 1871 he was living in Cotham, St Helens and was one of ten children. James played for the Saints in their third season. He played in the forwards and first appears on the team sheet in the home victory over Liverpool Rifle Brigade on the 9th of October 1875. He was joined in the pack by his brother Thomas. When James hung up his boots he concentrated on the family timber business. He married Emily Broomfield from Bagshot in Surrey in April 1885. The couple had two sons, Frederic and Ernest both of whom prospered by working in the family timber business. James moved out of St Helens to the more salubrious residence of Woodlands in Eccleston Park. He remained there for the rest of his life. His connections with the town remained strong and indeed he became the Mayor of St Helens from 1912-13. He was later knighted for this services. James died on the 22nd of April, 1940 aged 82. He left a sum of £40 071 in his will, enough in those days to purchase about 70 brand new terraced houses. |
