Biography of Edward Robinson |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Edward Atherton Robinson BANKER ON THE MOVE Edward was born in Broad Oak Road, Parr, St. Helens in July 1852. His early life is somewhat sketchy but it is evident that he trained as a bank cashier and took up lodgings in Queens Park Road, St. Helens. This well-to-do dIstrict was also the area off residence of several of his contemporary Saints’ team-mates. Edward was a renowned sprinter and participated in many Athletics events around Lancashire. A profile in the Athletics News in 1875 describes him as weighing in at 8 and a half stones, hardly conducive for playing rugby one might think. Edward is recorded as playing in two matches. His debut was against Rock Ferry Vipers in the 6th of February 1875. Unfortunately, a bad knock to his knee kept him out of rugby and athletics for the rest of that year. His final outing was against Glodwick on the 21st of January 1882. Edward, donning the colours of St. Helens Rangers, was victorious that day and the flier played in the three-quarters. As we have incomplete records of that record it is highly probable, given his recorded activities over a considerable length of time, that Edward featured in other games for the Saints. Edward was somewhat of a rover and he relocated to other lodgings in Wellington Terrace , St. Helens. Again this was in the salubrious St Anne’s district of the town. However, by the end of the century he had moved to live at 455 Fourth Street, Stretford in Manchester. He was still operating as a bank cashier. Soon after Edward married Mary Ann Walton in the spring of 1905 and they proceeded to have two children, Edward and Jessie. The 1911 Census has Edward and his family living at 58 Duke Street, Rusholme, Manchester. It is interesting to note that his place of birth was recorded as Broad Oak, Lancashire with no reference to Parr nor St. Helens. Edward died in October 1935 at the age of 83. His death was recorded in South Manchester. |
