Biography of Frederick Pritchard

HERITAGE NO :
Frederick Pritchard

GAS WORKS MANAGER

Frederick was born in Sutton Weaver, Cheshire in July 1855. His father, John, was a Glassworks Manager which undoubtedly explains why the family moved to St. Helens. His brother, John, also relocated to St. Helens with the family and played for the Saints in their first ever fixture against Liverpool Royal Infirmary.

Frederick was not far behind in rugby terms although he was two years younger than John. He played against Wigan on the 6th of December 1874 as an eighteen year old forward. That particular encounter which would have probably been the first ‘derby’ match and ended in a draw. He is recorded as playing 5 matches for the St. Helens Club but as we have incomplete records it is highly probable, given his recorded activities over a considerable length of time, that Frederick featured in many other games for the Saints. His last recorded match for the Originals was on the 3rd of February 1877 against Cheetham. The game was played at the Queens Park Ground off Prescot Road. The Saints were beaten by the Manchester side that day. In 1879 Frederick was still a young man at the age of 23 and decided to participate in the trial match for St. Helens Recs. He was one of nineteen former Saints that played in that game.

Frederick was a gas engineer. He married Elizabeth Tarbuck in Wigan on the 10th of MaRch 1880. They proceeded to have four children. In 1881 Frederick was living at the Manager’s House and Cottage in Huyton. The residence was reserved for the Manager of the local Gas Works.

His final residence was at Meadowside, Tarbock Road in Huyton He died in that town on the 16th of May 1933 at the age of 77. He left the sum of £12322 in his will, which would have been the value of £625000 in 2023.
