Biography of Charles Newcombe

HERITAGE NO :
Charles Frederick Newcombe

RAINHILL HOSPITAL ASYLUM DOCTOR

Charles was born in Newcastle upon Tyne on the 15th of September 1851. In 1861 he was resident at Angle House in Islington, London, an indication that his family were comfortably well off. His father, William Lister Newcombe was a Railway Agent. Following his medical education Charles found himself working at the Rainhill Hospital Asylum Hospital as a doctor. The area was also the residence of several ‘Original’ players for the fledgling St. Helens RFC men like George Miller Bushby.

Charles played in the match against Wigan on the 6th of December 1874. He played in the forwards that day and the match ended as a drawn game. Charles also played against the Liverpool Rifle Brigade in October 1875. There are very records of those early matches and we can assume that he could well have been a regular player at the time.

He married Marion Arnold in 1879 in Marylebone, London and they went on to have 6 children. Like many of his social circle, Charles was highly mobile and he was soon on the move to pastures new. By 1881 he had moved to Applethwaite in Westmorland and was running a General Practice as a doctor.

In 1888 Charles and his family had moved across the world to Victoria, British Colombia, Canada where he would settle down for the rest of his life. The well travelled and well healed gentleman died on that large island on the 19th of October 1924 at the age of 73.
