Biography of John Massey |

HERITAGE NO : John Massey SWEET SUCCESS Many Saints’ aficionados would suggest that the only Saint to have been born in the Netherlands was the talented Tim Jonkers who played in the red vee in the early 2000s. We may have unearthed another! John Massey was born in the Netherlands in 1848. At some point and by some means he decided to settle in St. Helens where he could pursue his dream of owning a confectionary business. Indeed, John together with his wife set up a sweet shop business in North Road, St. Helens. On the rugby field he played for St. Helens RFC on the 6th of December 1874 in the home fixture against Wigan. The match ended in a draw. Doubtless, he ended the fixture caked in mud at that time of the year. It is highly possible that John played in further fixtures but team records are scarce in that period of the Saints history. However, we do know that he married his wife Sarah Riley in Manchester in 1868 and remained in the town for the rest of his life. He lived in Napier Street for many years. John passed away in St. Helens in August 1927 at the age of 79. |
