Biography of Thomas Garner |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Thomas Garner SWORE BY HIM Thomas was a local lad who was born in St Helens in June 1854. He lived with his grandparents as a child. His grandfather, Thomas, had a Tobacconist shop in Liverpool Road, St. Helens. In 1871 Thomas was still living with his grandparents in Harris Street, St. Helens and his occupation was given as a Solicitor’s Clerk for John Swift and Co. Thomas was one of several players in the early days of St. Helens RFC who plied his trade in the world of law. He was a forward on the rugby field and played in the drawn game against Wigan on the 6th of December, 1874. He married Elizabeth Boyle and they had four children, one of whom, a daughter Edith, sadly died at the age of two. After moving for a short time to Peasley Cross Lane, Joseph became a fully fledged Solicitor and Commissioner for Oaths. This enabled him to set up his own law business in St. Helens and move to the salubrious residence of Wellesley in Eccleston Park. Thomas also joined the Sr. Helens lodge of the Masons at the same time. Thomas died on the 26th of January 1917 and left a tidy sum of £2558 to his daughter Mary and son Thomas who had recently become a solicitor himself. |
