Biography of William Cook |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Johnson Cook MAN OF IRON William Cook was one of the Saints’ Originals and featured in their early matches. He was born in St Helens on the 8th of April, 1850 and became well known as a local industrialist and employer. His father Joseph was a well known Iron Founder of local birth and his mother, Eleanor (nee Johnson), was born in Manchester. Their early home was in Westfield Street, St Helens right in the town centre. As the family expanded they relocated to the salubrious Cowley Mount in St Helens. William was a member of the ‘Originals’ a nickname given to the first teams of St Helens RFC. He played in the forwards in a side whose core was constructed from the upper echelons of St Helens society. It was remarkable that the team contained two players who operated Iron Foundries in the town, the other being John Pritchard. The two men of iron were in the team that drew with Wigan on the 6th of December 1874. Like a few others in that team William joined the local lodge of Freemasons in 1890. William was regarded as an engineer and Iron Foundry entrepreneur. William married Mary Jane and they raised four children. The family moved to live at Shawhurst, Rainford. William died in Rainford in April 1936 aged 86. |
