Biography of John Cannington

HERITAGE NO :
John Cannington

BOTTLE WORKS CASUAL

The Cannington family had a important part in the industrial history of St Helens. John Cannington SNR was born in Bristol and moved north to establish a bottle works in St Helens together with his business partner John Shaw. Like other well-to-do industrialist at the time, the family decided to live in more salubrious surroundings rather than amongst the populace that created their wealth. In this case the Cannington’s moved to Crosby Road, Waterloo, Lancashire.

The younger John was born in Hull, Yorkshire in October 1850. He did not remain in Hull very long because the following year the Cannington’s had moved to Everton, Liverpool with his father being described as a Glass Manufacturer. Young John had pursued a qualification in Chemistry, doubtless to be utilised in his father’s glass enterprise.

We are aware that John Cannington and his brother Arthur played rugby for the Waterloo Club and probably played for the Saints on a social, casual basis; after that was the nature of the sport at the time. He made his debut against Wigan on the 6th of December 1874. The game ended in a draw.

John married Catherine Maud Kershaw in 1880 and one year later the couple were living in Penge, Surrey. It appeared that John had not utilised his chemistry education that much as he as living off the interest from dividends. Apparently, there was no more ‘world of work’ for John. In 1901 he had moved to Brighton, Sussex and he was the proud father of two daughters. He died in October 1906, aged 56, and his death was registered in Eastbourne, Sussex.
