Biography of Charles Wilson |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Charles Cuthbertson Wilson CHEMIST Charles was born in Bootle, Lancashire on the 4th of September 1849. According to the 1851 census, his father, John, was a manufacturing chemist from Scotland. The family moved to live in Liverpool Road, St. Helens. Glass manufacturing was booming in the town and new entrepreneurs and Chemist like John were attracted by the burgeoning glass oriented industrial and business networks. His father died in the 1860s a short time after this date leaving behind Charles and his siblings living with his widowed mother Esther, who was a ‘china dealer’ of some repute. Charles played in the very first match for the newly-formed St. Helens RFC, a twenty-a-side game against Liverpool Rifle Brigade, on 24th of January 1874 at Boundary Road, St. Helens. He played in the forwards that day. St. Helens didn’t trouble the scorers on that great day; the opposition that day made five touchdowns, but didn’t convert any so the result was ‘a draw in their favour’!Charles also played cricket for St. Helens Cricket Club. In 1871 Charles cemented his place in St. Helens society by joining the local branch of the Freemasons. No fewer than 12 players from the early days eventually joined the same lodge including his chum John Lightfoot Wolfenden. Charles married Alice Jane Pritchard on 28th August 1875. Alice was the sister of John Pritchard another Saints team mate from that very first match. This was another example to illustrate the social and business circle that wrapped around the members of the ‘Originals ‘teams. By 1891 he had become an analytical chemist like his father and was living at 178 Dentons Green Lane with Alice. The couple had three children Alice, Dora and Arnold. Charles and his family emigrated to San Francisco, California, USA in 1901. They were lucky enough to escape the great earthquake which hit San Francisco in 1906. That disaster killed 3000 residents and destroyed 80% of the city. The That good fortune did not last a long time. Charles died on the 29th of November 1907 in San Francisco. By 1911, his wife, Alice and their children had returned to St. Helens and were living in Speakman Road close to their previous family home. |
