Biography of Robert Thomas

HERITAGE NO :
Robert William Hughes Thomas

ANOTHER ORIGINALS CLERK

Robert was born in St. Helens on the 19th of January 1855. His father, also named Robert, was a solicitor’s clerk. Robert Junior would follow his father’s footsteps in that regard. The 1871 census gives his address as the Lindow Grove School, Wilmslow. He was 16 in that year and boarding at the school.

He made his debut for the Saints in the very first fixture for St. Helens RFC. It was a twenty-a-side game against Liverpool Rifle Brigade, on 24th of January 1874 at Boundary Road, St. Helens. Robert played in the three-quarters on that occasion. St. Helens didn’t trouble the scorers on the day at all; the opposition that day made five touchdowns, but didn’t convert any so the result was ‘a draw in their favour’! The team that day were composed of mostly well-to-do residents of the town and their social or business contacts. The 20 players included another three clerks and a solicitor.

By 1881 he was a practising solicitor and living with his mother, Mary Angelina, at Cowley Bank, Windle Street, St. Helens. In the 1891 census he is described as a 36 year old ‘Solicitor of the Supreme Court,’ still living at the same address in Windle Street and providing 16, Ormskirk Street, St. Helens as his business address. In 1911 he was still living with his 82 year old mother and that he was a colonel in the territorial army.

Robert died on the 12th of September 1935. He left a colossal £18000 in his will.
