Biography of Joseph Roberts |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Joseph Thomas Roberts DRAPED IN SUCCESS Joseph was born in Tremierchion, Flintshire, Wales on the 1st of March, 1851. His early life was spent on the farm of his grandparents. In 1871, he was a draper’s assistant at High Street, Llanfyllin, Wales. This settlement is 14 miles south west of Oswestry and was for a long time a key market town on the Welsh borders, certainly an ideal place to generate trade. Joseph played in the very first match for the newly-formed St. Helens RFC, a twenty-a-side game against Liverpool Rifle Brigade, on 24th of January 1874 at Boundary Road, St. Helens. He was one of 13 forwards! St. Helens didn’t trouble the scorers on the day at all; the opposition that day made five touchdowns, but didn’t convert any so the result was ‘a draw in their favour’! As soon as he had qualified as a draper he took it upon himself to look for his fortune in the rapidly expanding towns of Lancashire. At the same time Joseph realised that there was much more money to be made by selling or producing fashion ware on a more industrial scale. In 1881, he had relocated to Chorlton cum Hardy in Manchester where he sold garments as a wholesaler. Some time later he established a Blouse manufacturing factory near Stockport in Cheshire. Joseph died on the 21st of January, 1936 at the age of 85. He left the princely sum of £38 762 in his will. That has a value of £1.8 million in today’s money (2023). |
