HERITAGE NO : John Hammill CHARTERED COURSE St. Helens-born, John is the elder brother of Martin. John was born on the 1st of March 1852 in Windle, St. Helens. The family lived originally in the Dentons Green area of the town. John’s father, John Cummings Hammill, was a brewer, who, by the time of John’s wedding to Caroline Mary on the 30th August 1878, was described as an ‘agent.’ The couple were married at St. Mark’s church, Worsley and Caroline’s father, Robert Lansdale, is described as a ‘gentleman’ in the banns. John played in the first ever match for the Saints on January 24th 1874. The opponents that day were Liverpool Royal Infirmary. The match ended in a draw even though the Liverpool team scored five tries to nil. John played in the backs that day. In 1881 they are living at 126 Dentons Green Lane and John is described as an ‘agent and accountant.’ They have two sons, Lansdale and Norman. By 1901, they are living in Millbrook House, 112, Millbrook Lane in Eccleston. John is 49 and his son Lansdale is an ‘article clerk.’ Ten years later, John is 59 and a ‘chartered accountant’. They have a cook and a housemaid living with them. John died in St. Helens in January 1937 at the age of 84. |
