William Gamble

WELL SERVED

William was born on the 16th August 1852 in St. Helens, he was the son of Sir David Gamble Bart CB and his wife Elizabeth Haddock. He was the eldest of eleven children. His father was the head of the chemical manufacturing giants, JC Gamble and Son.

William played alongside his brother in the very first match for the newly-formed St. Helens RFC, a twenty-a-side game against Liverpool Rifle Brigade, on 24th of January 1874 at Boundary Road, St. Helens. He was one of 13 forwards! St. Helens didn’t trouble the scorers on the day at all; LRB made five touchdowns, but didn’t convert any so the result was ‘a draw in their favour’!

William married Eleanor Eliza Ker the on 26th April 1877 and their only child, Dorothy Ethel Gamble was born in 1879. The family residence in 1881 was Windle Haresfinch Hall. William was described as an alkali manufacturer and the house also contains: a governess, cook, serving maid, parlour maid, housemaid and kitchen maid. In 1901, they relocated to Briars Hey, in Rainhill. At the age of 48, William had already retired from the alkali manufacturing business and become a local magistrate.

William died suddenly at his Briar’s Hey home. On the 15th January 1907 aged 55. His father, Sir David Gamble, was said to be ‘broken-hearted’ and died himself three weeks later. He left £129,383-2s-4d in his will.
