HERITAGE NO : John Forster FREEMAN AND SAINT John was born in St. Helens on the 28th of December 1853.In 1861, the family lived in South John Street. His father, Samuel Forster, was 42 and an ‘engine smith’, born in Burtonwood. John was apprenticed as an engineer at Robinson Cook & Co; Atlas Foundry, St. Helens. In 1876 he entered the boiler-making department and two years later in partnership with his elder brother, founded the business D. & J. Forster, Navigation Boiler Works, Bridgewater Street, St. Helens. John played in the first ever match for St. Helens RFC. He was one of thirteen forwards on the 24th January 1874 who took on Liverpool Royal Infirmary. The match ended in a draw but because Liverpool Royal Infirmary scored five tries to nil, the result was awarded in their favour. By 1891, 37-year-old John had married Esther and they have a daughter and three sons. John is a ‘mechanical engineer boiler maker’ and they lived at 35, Cowley Hill Lane. By 1911 he had moved to the salubrious Wynne House in ‘Cowley Hill’. John Forster was elected unopposed to represent the Hardshaw Ward in the 1887 Municipal elections. He became Mayor of St.Helens in the year 1900. John died at Wynne House, Cowley Hill Lane St. Helens Lancashire died 20 December 1927 aged 74. He left £12,485-5s-0d in his will. John Forster OBE JP was a Freeman of the borough. A Borough or City Council may admit “persons of distinction and persons who have in the opinion of the Council rendered eminent services to the city, borough or royal borough” as Honorary Freemen. John was inducted in 1924 and other related inductions include Alex Murphy [2000] and St Helens RFC [2001]. |
