Biography of George Bushby

HERITAGE NO :
George Miller Bushby

WINTER SAILS

George Miller Bushby was born in Liverpool on the 10th of September 1856. Before he had reached his fifth birthday he had moved to live in Rainhill, Lancashire. His father, Joseph, was a sailcloth manufacturer. Rainhill was a desirable location for the wealthier classes and several members of early Saints teams had residences and connections there.

George would have been seventeen years of age when he made his debut in the first ever match for St Helens RFC.. That match was against Liverpool Royal Infirmary in somewhat damp, cool conditions at their designated pitch in Boundary Road, St Helens. George was one thirteen forwards who represented the Saints that day.

George married Lucy Ellen Draper on the 21st of August 1886 in Rainhill and the couple had a daughter Mary who was born in 1895. In that year the family were resident at 31 Strand Street, Rainhill which was described as a “Counting House and Room”. George appeared to business interests together with his father in a Size and Pith Works in Farnworth, Widnes.

By the time of the 1911 Census George had become a widower and had already retired from the business. He had the same status in 1939 and was described as living on his ‘Own Means’.

George died in Rainhill on the 21st of August 1940 leaving an interesting sum of £20 to his one and only daughter, Mary.
