HERITAGE NO : John Joys Broome TAILOR MADE John was born in April 1854 in St Helens. His father, John, was a tailor who had a shop at 11 Liverpool Road, St Helens. In the Genus returns of 1861 and 1871 he was listed as a tailor and draper. John Joys followed in his father’s footprints and took up the needle. John was member of the team that played the first ever match on January 24th 1874 against Liverpool Royal Infirmary. He started that game as a forward but in subsequent matches he was to be found in the backs. John was a regular member of the team for the next five years. He married Betsey in Southport in 1885 and they went on to have daughters Bessie and Annie.John joined the Masons at the Southport Lodge in 1887. Other members of that original St Helens RFC team also became members in various locations. In his profession John moved business addresses around the country. After setting up his own tailoring business in Park Road, St Helens he moved to Southport and then Seaforth in Lancashire. His next move was to Newtown, Wales. Finally he settled down in Manchester where he died in 1939 aged 84. |
