Biography of Thomas Bell

HERITAGE NO :
INITIAL STEAK IN THE CLUB

Thomas Bell was born on the 28th of June 1844 in St Helens. The 1871 census tells us that Thomas Bell, aged 26, is a butcher at 3, Bridge Street. With many members of the first ever St Helens RFC team it is easy to see how they would be connected in business, residentially or socially. The fact that Thomas had a business right in the heart of the town centre would have brought him into contact with many locals on a daily business. One could envisage how he might be enticed into a game of football perhaps as a ‘beefy recruit’.

The inaugural match took place on the 24th of January , 1894 featuring Liverpool Royal Infirmary as the opponents. Even though the visitors to St Helens scored 5 tries to nil, the quirks of scoring in those days meant that the result was declared a draw ‘in favour’ of the more experienced Liverpool Royal Infirmary. By all accounts the weather was somewhat inclement. The only other team sheet from the fixtures of that year does not feature Thomas Bell.

In any event Thomas relocated to 18 Bridge Street, North Meols, Southport where Thomas had continued his butchery business. He had a wife, Mary and four children named Joseph, Harold, Thomas and Marian. Some time later later he had hung up his cleaver and moved to Royston Yorkshire where he was employed in the Chemical industry. The last reference to him comes in 1911, when he has moved again, this time to 150 Lathom Road, East Ham, London. In the Census he was described as a widower and was living with his eldest son Joseph. In a change of occupation he had become a night watchman. Thomas died in London in April 1921 and his death was registered in the Pancras district of the city.
