MATCH REPORT : PEMBERTON V ST. HELENS 28 APRIL 1891 The Saints went to Pemberton last week for the return League match and received a severe beating. At least it would have been severe under normal circumstances. A goal and two tries to nil is not pleasant to contemplate when you’ve got nothing to counter-balance it. There is a good excuse however. St . Helens had only six first seamers turn up and they had to pick up four substitutes at the ground. And what do you think these beggars did? They just turned round and played with the other side. I made my informant swear to this fact, so that I can be sure of it. The Pemberton three-quarter on one occasion rushed to seize the ball from the line-out, and one of the substitutes calmly stood aside and let him pass. That’s one instance, and as for them shoving in the pack, well ask any of the forwards. Score: - Pemberton 1 goal and two tries to St. Helens nil. |
