MATCH REPORT : ST HELENS V WIGAN 24 JANUARY 1889

The illuminated football match was played at St. Helens on Thursday night and was in every sense a complete success. The attendance could not be less than 7000 and the well-adopted ground of the St. Helens Football Club presented a gay and animated appearance. The ground was illuminated by 12 of the Well’s patent elevated lights, whilst the entrance to the field was lit up by three of the lights.

Wigan were strengthened by the inclusion of Jack Hurst of Leigh the well know three-quarter. Hurst played superbly and was mainly instrumental in gaining a victory for his side. Fred Shaw, ‘Buff’ Berry and J. Woodward were due to put in an appearance for the Saints but the latter two unfortunately were unable to put in an appearance. The game commenced amongst great excitement and before many minutes had elapsed The Saints had drawn first blood in the shape of a minor. From this point up to half time the visitors had the best of play and scored one goal and one try with our any further response from St. Helens

The second half was splendidly contested, some good football taking place in which the Saints had a slight advantage. Following some splendid play Billy Cross scored a great try for the Saints. Joe Allen converted it into a goal. At the conclusion affairs victory rested with the Wigan club by 2 goals, 1 try and 3 miners to St. Helen’s 1 goal and two minors.

The St. Helens Club want to publicly return their thanks to Mr. Jim Slevin , the Wigan captain, and to each individual player of that Club for their assistance at this match and to say that the venture has proved more successful than the most ardent could have hoped for.
