MATCH REPORT : St Helens v Liverpool Rifle Brigade 16 January 1875 A match was played on the ground of the Rifle Brigade (5th L.V.R.) in Prince’s Road, which was in excellent condition, in spite of the sloppy weather all week. The St. Helens team having the choice of goals, and the captain, either from a spirit of courtesy - his team looking heavier than the home team - or from a mistake as to the nature of the ground, chose, if anything, the more difficult goal to defend. The result was that the Brigade forced the visitors to touch-down in defence several times, and obtained two unsuccessful tries at goal before half time was called. After half time and change of goals, the Brigade seemed to still have their own way, aided by the capital running of Messers, Carrruthers, Reid, and Partington, and secured another try at goal, which was unsuccessful. Shortly afterwards, retrieved , by an excellent kick out of a scrummage, by Mr Foulkes, securing a goal. The result was Brigade scoring one goal, three tries and six quarter ways to St. Helens nothing. A result contrary to the expectations of most present, the St. Helens having given the Brigade a pretty severe beating in the former match, of which this was the return. Their players Herman, Thomson, Farley and others were in splendid form. |
