Biography of Kevin Naiqama

Kevin started his NRL career with the St George Illawarra outfit but had to wait until he joined the Newcastle Knights, where his brother Wes was also playing, before making his NRL debut. The exciting back scored 9 trie sin 15 matches for the Knights. the 2014 season saw Kevin move to the Penrith Panthers where he collected 7 tries in 8 games. between 2015 and 2018 he was on the books of Wests Tigers where he played 86 matches scoring 32 tries in the process.

Kevin was very proud of his Fijian heritage and he played 15 matches for them from 2009 culminating in his appointment as the Fiji Captain for the 2017 World Cup. That tournament demonstrated Kevin`s attacking flair, leadership qualities and trysoring prowess. He could play in most back positions demonstrating his versatility.

Kevin joined the Saints at the perfect moment. The team was on fire in 2019 and finished the season some 16 points clear of second place Wigan and having lost just three league matches. His right wing partnership with Tommy Makinson proved to be dominant against all opposition. Kevin himself crossed for 20 tries often utilising his incisive, beautifully timed angled runs. The conclusion of the season witnessed Saints crowned Champions as they defeated a spirited Salford Red Devils side in the Grand Final at Old Trafford.

In the 2020 season Kevin remained a key ingredient as the Saints retained their Super League crown with a pulsating last second victory over arch rivals Wigan. His brilliant attacking line running and clinical tryscoring went a long way to Saints retaining their Champion’s crown. Furthermore, he was instrumental in developing younger players who were emerging from the ranks of the Saints. Kevin scored 9 tries in 21 matches during a campaign which suffered greatly from the Covid pandemic.

2021 proved to be his last season with the Saints. Kevin demonstrated again his professionalism in the way he guided and cajoled the team on the pitch. In a fairy tale season Kevin collected a Challenge Cup winner’s medal as the Saints prevailed over Castleford at Wembley Stadium. A third successive Grand Final victory over Catalans Dragons was marked by a near faultless display which included a brilliant brace of tries and the accolade of the Harry Sunderland Trophy as player of the match.
