Biography of Lachlan Coote

HERITAGE NO : 1246
Lachlan represented New South Wales and Australia at junior level. He started his career at Penrith Panthers before moving north to join the North Queensland Cowboys. He was a member of the Cowboys side which lifted the 2015 NRL Premiership and 2016 World Club Championship. In his Penrith days he played 83 matches scoring 43 tries, 10 goals and a drop goal. for the Cowboys he chimed in for 15 tries from 83 games.

Lachlan was a smart footballer who could operate successfully at full back and in the half backs. He was sound in defence with a clever kicking game close to the opponent's tryline. In 2018 he played nine matches for the Cowboys and spent much of the season playing for Mackay Cutters in the Queensland Cup. He joined the Saints on a three years contract.

The signing of Lachlan for the 2019 proved to be one of the most inspirational ever. His calmness in defence, strategic leadership and as a lynchpin in attack consolidated the team as the Saints embarked on a record breaking league campaign. he even inspired a new song proclaiming that Lachlan was the reason why the Saints led the league that season. of course, Lachlan would be the first to point to other contributing factors citing the coaching Of Justin Holbrook, the power in attack of Tommy Makinson and the mature guidance of Jonny Lomax amongst many others. His recruitment also unearthed an accurate goalkicking ability which he had kept hidden in his NRL days.

At the conclusion of the 2019 campaign Saints finished top of the league table a record breaking 16 points clear of second placed Wigan. At Old Trafford the Saints were crowned Super League champions and Lachlan was indeed one of the main reasons for our success

. In the 2020 season Lachlan remained a key ingredient as the Saints retained their Super League crown with a pulsating last second victory over arch rivals Wigan. His tactical kicking, creative incursions into the back line and reliable goalkicking cemented his standing as one of best to play full back for the Saints. Furthermore, he was instrumental in developing younger players who were emerging from the ranks of the Saints. Lachlan scored 10 tries and booted over 73 goals in just 16 matches during a campaign which suffered greatly from the Covid pandemic.

2021 proved to be his last season with the Saints. Lachlan demonstrated again his professionalism in the way he guided and cajoled the team on the pitch. In a fairy tale season Lachlan collected a Challenge Cup winner’s medal as the Saints prevailed over Castleford at Wembley Stadium. A third successive Grand Final victory over Catalans Dragons was marked by a near faultless display. In 2022 it proved difficult for the Saints faithful to see Lachlan run out in a Hull KR jersey after such a triumphant career in the Red Vee.
