Biography of James Bentley



HERITAGE NO : 1244

James was a clear winner of the Championship Young Player of the Year in 2017. A tough and talented second row forward he was expected to hit the heights of Super League with the Saints. The signs were good when James scored a hat trick in a pre-season friendly against Sheffield Eagles in January 2018. James began his career with the Oulton Raiders ARLFC
,br> the 2020 was a breakthrough year for James when he demonstrated great enthusiasm and ability on the field and forced his way into the team on a regular basis. His weaving runs and strongarm defence produced a series of Man of the Match performances and were testimony to a hard off season and a dedication to improve his skills. He was rewarded with a place in the Grand Final team which overcame Wigan in the dramatic finale at Old Trafford.

The 2021 campaign was perfectly woeful for James as two serious injuries reduced his appearances to just ten matches. Moreover, these setbacks robbed James of likely winning appearances in the Challenge Cup Final and the Grand Final. He had to watch on the sidelines as a dominant Saints completed the double. James opted to move back home to join Leeds Rhinos for the 2022 season. Sadly this great prospect endured a muted exit from the Saints.
