Biography of Joseph Molyneux

HERITAGE NO : 274
Joseph Molyneux by SHS

From the Players' Registers we see that Joseph was from Elephant Lane, Thatto Heath. Essentially a right wing threequarter, he seemed to have pace and try-scoring ability. He made his debut at Hull KR on 17th January 1920 and scored a hat-trick in his second game for the seniors against Wakefield Trinty in Saints' 49-2 victory on 3rd April 1920. 'Scrum-Half' in the Reporter wrote the following about the three-try wonder: 'The Saints had a new wing threequarter in the person of J. Molyneux, a local junior and he had the pleasure of scoring three of the tries. That he is a player of promise there is no doubt and he is rightly built for the purpose".

Joseph roared in for another three on 25th February 1920 at Swinton, in a 17-8 success and he also played [on the right wing] against the visiting Australians at Knowsley Road in November 1921. His last game for the club was against York at Knowsley Road. Saints won 17-8 and he was partnered in the centre by Yorkshireman Bert Roberts. Joseph had a brother John who played for the Saints A Team. Then, the trail goes cold. Or does it? It seems that Joseph`s sister, Rachel, was the mother of the famous Waring brothers who played in particular during the years on and around the Second World War. If anyone has any further information on this player, we would like to hear from you. We know that Joseph was a Glass Warehouse clerk. In 1939, he was residing in Tamworth Street, St Helens. He died in his hometown in December 1978, aged 85.
